Forest Idle - GodotWildJam #85
Game released for Godot Wild Jam 85 (Theme Expansion)
Collect pumpkin in this forest idler. Plant trees, expand and try to reach 5 pumpkins to finished the game.
🌱 Choose a tree form (plant, baby oak or oak) from the shop on the right side by clicking on it.
🌱 Then plant the tree in a free terrain tile by clicking on it. The available tiles are brighter than the others. Each time you plant a tree, a new terrain tile is available for you to plant. The cost of the tree is also increasing.
🌳 Each tree is giving you different amount of "money". Money can be leaf - for plant and baby oak - or wood - for baby oak and oak. The items in the shop must be bought with leaves.
🌳 You can also build a laboratory to improve your trees (more gain) or get more terrain tile available when you plant. The improvements in the lab must be bought with wood.
🖱️ Click middle mouse button to move the camera. Wheel up/down to zoom in/out. Right click to unselect an item.
⌨️ R to restart, ESC to pause (but broken don't do it ! Really !)
The game is clearly not finished, not well balanced and there are some UI bugs, but hey, didn't have enough time :'-)
Joker used :
Automnal : Oak is colored as automnal tree, leaves are falling
Single location : All the game is at the same place
Limited color palette : Only green, brown and blue have been used (with different value of intensity)
Music by Alkakrab
Planned after the jam (if the game is warm welcomed) :
- Tooltips
- Show/hide shop
- Lab shop follow camera zoom
- Better zoom and camera movement
- Move camera with arrow/wasd keys
- Resolve pause bug

First thing, before I got into the game, the settings menu did make me laugh with how it has so much empty space for only one actual setting (for the video options, that is). The settings menu wouldn't allow me to close it either, forcing me to refresh the browser before I could actually play the game; no idea if this means settings can't be saved once changed.
Once in the game, I noticed the zooming being "anchored" on the top-left corner, and it was slightly difficult to get used to peculiarity. It'd make more sense if it was anchored to the center of the display, or to the cursor's current position. The panning was also a bit slow while zoomed further out, and would require me to drag the full available cursor space a couple times to get a decent survey of the area. Its speed is great when zoomed in closer, though.
A detail I really enjoyed was the tiny leaves fluttering around across the otherwise empty blue void of the background. Some subtle clouds could also help to keep it visually stimulating while matching the theme and aesthetic. However, the UI on the right seems to have some unusual behaviors. When I use right-click to deselect an object, the pertinent button stays highlighted as though I have it selected. The research lab button changes color when hovered (and while another item is selected), but the others don't share this behavior (aside from the button text, which changes slightly).
Additionally, it was unclear how the wood resource was to be used until I purchased a research lab and realized that the associated cost for the lab was in wood, not leaves. The game description on the itch.io page doesn't seem to mention this (I read it over a few times to be sure before commenting). It'd be useful to denote that it requires wood to purchase by putting a symbol by the listed price on the button (and a leaf symbol for the other items)
One thing that I really enjoyed was the realization that each subsequent research lab offered the same upgrades, but at the original price points, so I could strategically buy extra research labs, buy the +1 grass tile spawn upgrade, and really feel like I had employed strategy to help me win. Final recommendation: It'd be cool if the game explicitly displayed how many resources each tree grants you when planted.
I apologize if some of these things were already noticed, but I wanted to be thorough in case it wasn't known. I also didn't experience the issues which the other commenter reported.
Hello calgarytrainwreck, first of all thanks a lot for these detailled feedback I appreciate that.
All those points are known yeah, I just didn't have enough time before the due date to handle that, but at least I got an even more detailled list that I have in my "TO FIX" file lol
I will fix all of that once the jam voting session close.
For information, for settings screen I don't know why it is bug as in non-web build it is not but it was too late to invistigate, and I planned a drawing at the top of the main screen but again, not enough time.
Thanks for all the bugs/annoying things you notice and forwhat you liked, it will helps me to improve the game. The research lab seems a bit cheaty designed like that but as you enjoyed that maybe it's a good choice and it just needs a growing cost when player want to have somes rather than only one.
my grass has went off the screen and i can plant anything now
the zoom in and out works but the move camera doesn't cos it won't deselect from the plant menu
You can right click to unselect the current item, let me know if it works
my progress reset now so cant check the map. But Im on chrome browser and it doesnt unselect for me. but the scroll works great for me
Ok thanks i will check that
rip started and its fully random i see and now i can only get 4 pumpkins :( love the idea and only suggestion is maybe a tab on on the bottom for the research upgrades
also it does deselect the item in your hand with right click but doesnt deselect the menu. wasd doesnt do anything and arrow keys move in the menu
I tried on Brave and Chrome and didn't get problems. The mouse motion when middle clicking needs to be on the environment, it doesn't move if your mouse is over the shop, that's why I plan to have the possibility to hide it :)
Yup wasd and arrows keys are not binded yet
And thanks for your comment, it helps me to improve the game !
